Farrell trying to emerge from Act 47…

City council members in Farrell have taken a small step toward exiting Act 47 bankruptcy protection. The Herald says council met this week and passed the first reading of a revised recovery plan that could see the city out of Act 47 in the next few years. Instead of using tax increases, it instead relies on increased collection rates and spending cuts. The city’s current non-resident wage tax is one-point-four percent. To leave Act 47 that tax rate must be lower than one percent.

Butler School District considering tax increase…

Property owners in the Butler School District are looking at a possible two-mill tax hike. That is because the school board has voted six-to-three to pass a preliminary budget calling for the increase. The 94-million dollar spending plan is scheduled for a final vote when the school board meets on June 24th.

Fire at nursing home in New Wilmington…

Some scary moments last night after a fire broke out at the Overlook Nursing Home in New Wilmington. The fire was reported not long after 8:00 o’clock. Multiple fire departments were called to the scene to assist with the fire and traffic control. Officials say workers at the nursing home worked to extinguish the fire. While a local church offered to house some of the residents, the New Castle News says none of the residents had to be taken from the nursing home.

Vehicle fire in Butler Township closes road…

A vehicle fire in Butler Township forced officials to close a section of South Benbrook Road for nearly an hour. The fire actually took place near the intersection of Greenwood Drive and Route 422. Crews were called to the scene and ended up closing South Benbrook leading to 422. The road was reopened around six o’clock last night. No injuries were reported and there was no word on what caused the fire.

Gas in Western Pa unchanged from last week…

The price of gas in Western Pennsylvania is unchanged from last week. That is according to the latest Weekly Fuel Gauge Survey from Triple A. The survey shows prices holding steady at three-48 per gallon. Motorists in New Castle are still paying that same average, three-48, while stations in Sharon continue to charge around three-52. While the average in Western Pennsylvania hasn’t changed, Triple A says the national average actually ticked up seven cents.

Ellwood City woman arraigned…

An Ellwood City woman was arraigned yesterday on charges that she embezzled more than 100-thousand dollars. 59 year old Victoria Rozanski is accused of taking that money while working as a manager at the Holy Redeemer Parish Federal Credit Union in Ellwood City. She was indicted on April 30th but was not arraigned until yesterday. If convicted, Rozanski could be ordered to serve up to 30 years in prison and pay a one million dollar fine.

Mercer County race for judge set…

Mercer County voters going to the polls yesterday were nominating candidates for judge of the court of common pleas. The Democratic nomination went to Victor Heutsche, whom collected 34-percent of the votes. On the Republican side, the nomination went to Daniel Wallace. He won that nomination in a landslide, bringing in nearly 60-percent of the votes in a field of five candidates.

New Castle School Board race…

New Castle School Board race from yesterday…former Superintendent George Gabriel was able to pick up both party nominations. Marilyn Berkley and Mark Pannela also secured both parties nominations. On the Republican side, the other nod went to Philip Conti. The remaining nomination on the Democratic ticket was picked up by Steve Fornataro.

Voter turnout low in Lawrence, Mercer counties…

Lawrence County’s voter turnout for yesterday’s primary was quite low. When the ballots were counted last night and posted on the county’s website…just under 16-and-a-half percent of the registered voters had cast ballots. That is less than nine-thousand people. Turnout in Mercer County was slightly higher at nearly 18-and-a-half percent. The counting of Mercer County’s ballots was completed and final results were posted on the Internet less than an hour and a half after the polls closed.

Oil City Police: four drunks arrested over the weekend

OIL CITY – Four alleged drunks were arrested by Oil City Police over the weekend. On Saturday police arrested Ryan Johnson for a belligerent incident at Billy’s Bar, and they arrested Annie Illiff, who was found laying on the side of a roadway.

In the wee hours Sunday, officers booked Kyle Seyler on Disorderly Conduct and Public Intoxication charges for an incident at Billy’s Bar. And at Double Play, Kurt Woods was arrested for Public Intoxication, Scattering Rubbish, and an Open Container violation.
